Boko Haram insurgents have massacred about 100 people in multiple attacks on three communities in Borno State, sources said.
Some terrorists hit the twin villages of Mussarami in Monguno Local Government, north of Borno State on Tuesday night shortly after breaking of fast. “The insurgents opened fire on the people and killed over 40,” says a military source, but a National Assembly member representing Monguno in the House of Representatives,
Hon. Mohammed Tahir Monguno, said 48 people were killed. He told BBC Hausa Service monitored in Maiduguri that he received the sad news of the incident.
“I received the sad news yesterday that Boko Haram attacked some communities in my area. Since Boko Haram insurgents were dislodged from Sambisa Forest, many of them have relocated to the area around Monguno where they have been picking on hapless villagers and killing residents there.
“On Tuesday, the terrorists attacked the twin villages of Mussarami 1 and Mussarami 11 in the night. They went there in the night when the villagers were resting after the day’s fasting and assembled them before opening fire on them,” he disclosed.
Also in Kukawa, headquarters of Kukawa Local Government located around Lake Chad, some 178 kilometres to Maiduguri, Boko Haram reportedly opened fire on residents as they were preparing to break their fast.
Sources said the insurgents rode to the town on motorcycles and two Toyota Hilux pick-up vans, rounded up residents as they gathered in major mosques preparing to break their fast. “They fired several shots at the people and set fire on houses. So far, 98 bodies have been recovered,” a vigilance member, who did not want to be named, said.
Efforts to get official confirmation from the Commissioner of Police, Mr Aderemi Opadokun, did not yield fruits. He did not respond to calls and SMS.
