UK to support Nigeria with N67bn yearly

The United Kingdom (UK) has pledged to support Nigeria’s effort towards ensuring stability and development with a commitment worth £218 million (N67 billion).

The country’s minister for Africa, Grant Shapps, said on arrival in Abuja on his maiden visit to Nigeria that the two countries would work together to increase the nation’s prosperity in the areas of trade and security.

He said the UK government would provide a comprehensive package of support to Nigeria, by expanding military training and intelligence cooperation.

According to him, the UK would also assist Nigeria on anti-corruption capacity building and investigative support, and an annual development programme worth £218 million (about N67 billion).

He said the country would also contribute to the increasing prosperity at the heart of a thriving trade relationship worth £6.1 billion per year (about N1.8 trillion).

He praised the UK’s close relationship with Nigeria and set out how the two countries would work together to increase prosperity, trade and security.

Good News! Ebola Vaccine Works, Offering 100% Protection In African Trial

A highly unusual clinical trial in Guinea has shown for the first time that an Ebola vaccine protects people from the deadly virus. The study, published online today by The Lancet, shows that the injection offered contacts of Ebola cases 100% protection starting 10 days after they received a single shot of the vaccine, which is produced by Merck. Scientists say the vaccine could help to finally bring an end to the epidemic in West Africa, now more than 18 months old.

"This will go down in history as one of those hallmark public health efforts," says Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy in Twin Cities, Minnesota, who wasn't involved in the study. "We will teach about this in public health schools."

"It's a wonderful result and a fantastic illustration of how vaccines can be developed very quickly and can be used in an outbreak situation to control the disease," says Adrian Hill, a vaccine researcher at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, also not involved in the work.

I Didn’t Fight My Wife, Neither Did I Beat Her - Former Benue Governor Suswam

The immediate past governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, on Sunday denied either beating or having any quarrel with his wife as reported in some sections of the media this week. According to a statement signed by his aide, Joseph Tsavsar, the publication was a concoction of some mischief makers, and aimed at bringing Mr. Suswam down by all means.

“My attention has been drawn to news making the rounds on social media and newspapers that I was arrested in London last week. That report is full of mischief and aimed at slandering me and my dear wife. Please disregard any news about a squabble between me and my dear wife. We’re fine,” Mr. Suswam said in the statement.

His aide Mr Joseph also stressed that Suswan was not near United Kingdom at the time they reported he was.
