Lionel Messi appreciated with a statue

Barcelona star Lionel Messi may have abruptly ended his international career after yet again losing out in the final of a major tournament, but that has not stopped Argentina from giving their due thanks to the attacker.

The Albiceleste lost to Chile on penalties in the Copa America final for the second year in a row, adding to the misery they suffered in the 2014 World Cup at the hands of Germany.

Cristiano Ronaldo: I will live like a king - and I will not be a coach

World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed he will “live like a king” once his playing career comes to an end, but has ruled out a move into coaching when he hangs up his boots.

Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer is in action on Sunday as Los Blancos look to move level with eternal rivals Barcelona in the La Liga title race at Valencia.

However, in a wide-ranging interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo, he admitted football doesn’t always captivate his interest.

“I have a top life, but I think I am going to enjoy it more when I finish my career, when I have time to do what I like,” he said.

“This Saturday there is a boxing bout in Las Vegas and I would like to take my friends and family to see it, and I can’t because I don’t have time.

Footballer Lionel Messi to be tried in Spain on tax fraud charges: court

Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi and his father Jorge are to stand trial on three counts of tax fraud that could carry prison sentences, a Spanish court confirmed on Thursday.

In a court filing, the judge in charge of the case rejected the request of the public prosecutor to try only the footballer’s father.

The pair were accused in 2013 of defrauding the taxman out of 4.16 million euros ($4.69 million) in taxes related to Messi’s image rights between 2007 and 2009 through the creation of fake companies in Belize and Uruguay.

Lionel Messi in Gabon, chauffeur driven by the country's president

Four-time world player of the year, Lionel Messi was hosted in Gabon on Saturday July 18th by the country's President, Ali Bongo, for the brick laying of their new 22,000 seat stadium. He was  chauffeur driven by the president himself around the streets of Libreville.

Messi officially started the building process at the Port-Gentil stadium, which will host Africa Cup of Nations matches in 2017. He came dressed in a casual pair of denim shorts and t-shirt
"When I was in Barcelona a few years ago, I met Messi who had told me that he would come to visit me in Libreville" said the Gabon president. "It's a promise he made me. He is a man of honour who just kept his word.".
There are reports that he was paid 3.5m Euros by Ali Bongo to make the appearance and it's causing serious wahala in the country. Gabonese are angry about the obscene amount and say their president belittled himself by driving Messi around. He was there for just one day.

Can the Barcelona TRIO win the champions League this Saturday?

Suarez (left), Messi (centre) and Neymar (right) pose with the Copa del Rey trophy on May 30

Can the Barcelona TRIO win the champions League this Saturday? It's all up to them to prove their worth on the field of play.

Since Luis Enrique presented Luis Suarez to his new team-mates Lionel Messi and Neymar last summer, saying: 'They've finally got him out of Guantanamo' — referring to the FIFA-imposed ban from all football activity that Barcelona successfully appealed against at the Court of Arbitration — the trio have gone from strength to strength.

Suarez strikes an acrobatic attempt at goal during the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao

He has scored fewer goals than his fellow forwards but, with Neymar and Messi as strike partners, that is unlikely to take the shine off a victory in Berlin

Neymar scores against Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final second leg at the Allianz Arena
