Code of Conduct Bureau files 13-count charge against Saraki over false assets declaration

Nigeria’s Code of Conduct Bureau has filed charges against Nigeria’s Senate President, Bukola Saraki, for alleged failure to fully declare his assets, SaharaReporters has learnt.

The tribunal’s 13-count charge exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters accuses Mr. Saraki, among other crimes, of improperly using state funds to purchase private assets during his tenure as the governor of Kwara State while he was senator of the federal republic of Nigeria.

The Senate President was also accused of declaring as part of his assets a property that had not been sold to him, a maneuver that is known as “anticipatory looting” in Nigeria’s political lexicon.

How Saraki Used Credit Card To Launder Stolen Funds - Sahara Reporters

SaharaReporters has received exclusive documents of a police investigation revealing how Nigeria’s current Senate President, Bukola Saraki, made a series of questionable deposits and illegal withdrawals from banks in order to launder stolen funds through shell companies and an American Express credit card. The report was authored by a team of detectives at the Special Fraud Unit of the Nigerian police headed by a Commissioner of Police.

The police investigation found that Mr. Saraki, during his tenure as Governor of Kwara State, was the “prime promoter” of several shell companies, including Skyview Properties Ltd., Limkers Ltd., Dicetrade Ltd., Carlisle Properties and Investment Ltd., and the parent company known as Joy Petroleum.

Senator Saraki’s moneymaking scheme, according to the details of the Special Fraud Unit’s
investigation, was to withdraw millions of naira disguised as loans from GTBank, Intercontinental Bank, Zenith Bank Plc. The funds were then moved into different accounts, sometimes under the guise that the purpose was to pay off some bank debts with other “loans.”

Senator Bukola Saraki: The Story of a Serial Traitor

By Oluwaseyi Oduyela

Dr. Bukola Saraki worked as a Medical Officer at Rush Green Hospital, Essex between 1988 and 1989. He was a Director of Societe Generale Bank (Nig) Ltd from 1990-2000. He was appointed special assistant to the President on Budget in 2000 and fired few months later.

Dr. Bukola Saraki was elected the Executive Governor of Kwara State in 2003 replacing his father’s former political godson, Mohammed Lawal. Commodore Lawal had fallen out with Olusola Saraki, and therefore, had to be shown the door with the active support and connivance of Obasanjo, Dr. Saraki was installed as the Governor of Kwara State.

By the time Bukola became Governor of Kwara State, he was the Vice Chairman of the defunct Societe Generale bank. While it may be a stretch to say that the bank collapsed under his stewardship, some argue that his family’s influence on the bank at the turn of the new century marked the beginning of the end of the bank.

A former governor of Kwara state, and senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District in Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber, Bukola Saraki, has issued a statement debunking reports that he snubbed a truce meeting called by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Mr. Saraki is a leading contender for the presidency of the Nigerian Senate, but he is not the official candidate of his party, the All Progressives Congress, which is rooting for his main challenger, Ahmed Lawan.

A report had indicated that Mr. Saraki boycotted a meeting called by Mr. Osinbajo to explore the possibilities of the APC having a consensus candidate ahead of the election of principal officers of the Senate and the House of Representatives Tuesday.

But the former governor has now issued a statement, saying he received no invitation to any meeting called by the vice president.

He also denied making disparaging comments about the vice president.

SENATOR SARAKI HAS GREAT RESPECT FOR THE PERSON AND OFFICE OF HIS EXCELLENCY, PROF OSINBAJO VICE PRESIDENT OF FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA

The attention of Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki’s media office has been drawn to a publication by an online tabloid which insinuated that “Senator Saraki Boycotts APC Leadership Meeting To be Chaired by VP Osinbajo”

We wish to categorically state that up to this very point 10:50pm, 8th of June 2015, senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki is yet to receive any official invitation from His Excellency Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria or through any other source for any meeting; political, social or otherwise.

Understanding the importance of last-minute consultation required for the inauguration of the 8th Assembly, Senator Saraki has been attending to meetings with colleagues and friends on the program for the 8th assembly.

Senator Saraki having been in public service in different capacity knows the importance of respecting the office and person of the Vice President. And therefore advise those spreading false news to cease and desist.

Senator Saraki therefore, uses this opportunity to assure His Excellency, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President of Federal Republic of Nigeria of his highest regards.
